January River Bernard was born on January 1, 1892, in Greenville, South Carolina. She was the daughter of former slaves, and her family was very poor. Despite these challenges, Bernard was a bright and ambitious young woman. She graduated from high school at the top of her class and went on to attend Howard University, where she earned a degree in education.

After graduating from Howard University, Bernard returned to Greenville to teach. She taught for several years, and during that time, she became increasingly involved in the civil rights movement. In 1921, she was one of the founders of the Greenville branch of the NAACP. She also served as the president of the South Carolina branch of the NAACP for many years.

In 1932, Bernard was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. She was the first African-American woman to be elected to the state legislature in South Carolina. She served in the House of Representatives for 12 years, and during that time, she fought for the rights of African-Americans in South Carolina.

In 1944, Bernard was elected to the United States Senate. She was the first African-American woman to be elected to the Senate. She served in the Senate for 18 years, and during that time, she fought for the rights of all Americans. She was a strong advocate for civil rights, education, and economic opportunity.
